MUSLIM POWER 100 LIST AND EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Islamic Bank of Britain recognises the 100 Most Powerful & Influential Muslims in Britain, and announces the winners of the Muslim Power 100 Excellence Awards.

The British bank that has pioneered Islamic Banking in the UK, Islamic Bank of Britain has announced the results of the Muslim Power 100 – a new initiative launched in association with Carter Andersen – to recognize Muslims who have made significant contributions to the social, cultural and economic well-being of Britain.

The Muslim community in Britain contributes over £31 billion pounds* to the British economy each year, and the purpose of the Muslim Power 100 is to promote the positive aspects of Islam and to highlight the valuable contribution made by Muslims in Britain.

The Muslim Power 100 are people who, either through position or personality, exercise a significant power that influences events and sets parameters in the conduct of their organisation, the climate of political debate and the shaping of new ideas. It has long been known and appreciated that many of the leading Muslim men and women contribute positively and often powerfully within all sectors of British life and Muslim Power 100 is a positive statement of integration, achievement and contribution to Britain.

Lords, entrepreneurs, financiers, scientists, lawyers and community leaders dominate the list. It includes curry king Sir Gulam Noon (worth £55 million), solicitor Imran Khan, and former head of the Muslim Council of Britain, Sir Iqbal Sacranie. Others include Nighat Awan, who heads the Shere Khan food business with her husband Rafique Awan, Muslim Labour peer Baroness Uddin, Britain’s most senior Asian policeman, Tarique Ghaffur, Independent columnist Yasmin Alibhai Brown and businessman Sir Anwar Pervez.

The Muslim Power 100 list was created after a process of public voting and then judging by a distinguished panel of judges, including Sir Iqbal Sacranie (Muslim Council of Britain) and Lord Bhatia (House of Lords).

The Muslim Power 100 publication also includes a list of 70 individuals highlighted as ‘ones to watch for 2007’. These individuals narrowly missed out on making the Muslim Power 100 list for 2007, but are expected to feature in the future.

The Muslim Power 100 is being launched at a special awards ceremony in London on Saturday February 10. At the same time, nine individuals are being awarded Muslim Power 100 Excellence Awards and there will also be an achievement award made for ‘Outstanding Contribution’.

Comments Sultan Choudhury of Islamic Bank of Britain: “We feel that it is now more important than ever to recognize the valuable contribution the Muslim community has made to the social, cultural and economic well-being of Britain. Islamic finance is the fastest growing sector of banking in the world and Islamic Bank of Britain has pioneered Islamic banking in the UK. Our work has brought us into contact with thousands of Muslims who are adding value to their communities and making a collective contribution to society. Not only does this list recognize exceptional achievements, but it also illustrates the opportunities for success available for Muslims in Britain.”
