Board Directors

Islamic Bank of Britain is run day to day by a senior management team overseen by an elected Board of Directors. The current BoD members are:

Mohsen Moustafa - Chairman
Deputy CEO, Qatar International Islamic Bank, Doha – Qatar

Mohsen Moustafa holds a BA (Hons) in Accounting and a Post Graduate Diploma in Cost Accounting.

For 24 years Mohsen Moustafa worked for three major US banks in California (Wells Fargo, Security Pacific and Union Bank) where he gained experience in retail and corporate banking. In 1999 he was Vice President in Corporate Finance at Union Bank when Qatar International Islamic Bank offered him a senior management position at its head office in Doha, Qatar.

He has been responsible for a major restructuring initiative to bring the best “American” banking and management practices to QIIB. Today QIIB, with almost $2 bn in assets is one of the most successful Islamic banks in the State of Qatar. QIIB is also a major shareholder and original sponsor of the Islamic Bank of Britain, the first Islamic bank in the United Kingdom.

Robert J Owen – Senior Independent Director

Robert is Chief Executive, White Label Loans, a specialist consumer finance business in the UK and he is also Director General, Ateneo Finance a non-conforming lender based in Spain.

He was previously Chief Executive and founder of London Mortgage Company leading the company through its successful programme of securitisations (MARS) and growing the business to over £1.4bn of mortgage assets.

His executive experience includes roles at Lloyds TSB, Kensington Mortgage Company and Yorkshire Building Society.

Robert has BA and MBA degrees and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers.


Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi – Non-Executive Director

Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi is a former Director of the Department of Commerce, and Asst. Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance, Economy and Commerce of Qatar (until 2004). He holds several directorships in Qatar, among which are Al Ahli Hospital Company and the Qatar Islamic Insurance Company. He has a BA in Social Science.

Abbul Hakim Al-Adhamy – Non-Executive Director  

Abdul Hakim Al-Adhamy has over 35 years experience in the provision of audit and advisory services to clients in both the financial and non-financial service sectors. He was previously a Partner with KPMG Bahrain & Qatar and a Partner with Ernst & Young Bahrain.

He is a British national and he holds a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the Baghdad University and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales

He holds a number of directorships which include the Board of Ebrahim Khalil Kanoo, Bahrain Shareholding Company (Close) and the Risk and Corporate Governance Committee, Kuwait Finance House, Bahrain

Mr. Al-Adhamy has an extensive experience in the provision of corporate governance advisory services for conventional and Islamic investment banks and trading companies.

Gerry Deegan - Managing Director

Gerry Deegan has over 35 years banking experience. His early career was spent with AIB Bank where he held a number of Retail Banking managerial positions including line and support roles. In 1995 he Joined Al Bank Al Saudi al Fransi as Head of Retail Banking and led the successful turn around of their retail network. In 2000 he was appointed AGM and Head of Retail Banking with Commercial Bank of Qatar and in that role assisted the bank to become a leading player in E-commerce and Retail Banking services in Qatar.

In 2004 he was appointed by Ahli United Bank, Bahrain as Deputy CEO with responsibility for Retail and Private Banking at Ahlibank Qatar where he led a programme of major growth. He joined Islamic Bank of Britain in November 2006 as Commercial Director and was appointed Managing Director in January 2007. He is an honours graduate of Limerick University (Ireland) and the Institute of Bankers (Ireland).

Sultan Choudhury – Commercial Director

Sultan Choudhury has been with the Bank since January 2004 during which time he set up Head Office Operations, increased the number of branches from one to eight, implemented the UK's first Halal Savings and Personal Finance products and raised the profile and awareness of Islamic Bank of Britain through public relations work in international, UK mainstream and ethnic media. He previously held senior roles at Charles Schwab Europe, Barclays Private Bank and Deloitte and Touche. He has BA and MBA degrees and is a Chartered Accountant (ACA).
